4th Grade History and Geography
Coursework
Week Six
This week we will be
continuing our study of the Middle Ages. We will be studying about monks and
monasteries. We will learn about the St.
Benedictine Monks and their order. We
will talk about the quiet life of solitude that the monks were drawn toward
during a time in history peppered with battles and wars. The Monk’s Supper project will need some
shopping preparation so please plan accordingly. You may want to complete the project on the
weekend rather than Monday night.

Finish up final
details of your castle. Be prepared to
explain your building materials and key parts of your castle to the class. Be careful to deliver it to the empty room
across from our class on Thursday morning.
We will move to that room after we begin class. I will be displaying the castles during lunch
on Tuesday the 23rd.

Cooking Project: Preparing
A Monk’s Supper
We learned in class that monks were men who promised to live a
quiet life of prayer and service to God.
To experience a “taste” of what life was like as a monk, prepare a typical
monk’s meal for supper one night.
Serve your meal to your family in quiet solitude (or at least see
how long your family can last without talking or giggling). Be prepared to share your results with the
class.
Materials:
Lentil or Split-Pea soup (use
mom’s recipe or canned)
A crusty loaf of bread
Sliced cheddar cheese
Sliced apples and pears
Water or apple cider to drink
