4th Grade History and Geography

Coursework

Week One

Welcome to the 4th grade history and geography class with Mrs. McManis.  This year we will begin the school year with a complete review of history beginning with creation.  We will then begin our study of one of the most fascinating periods of time know as the Middle Ages.  Students will be required to bring their designated history binders to class each day as well as their two textbooks:  A Child’s History of the World and Ages Story of the Middle Ages. Homework for this week will be very light as students are encouraged to peruse their books at home and their course materials.  Their textbook Famous Men of the Middle Ages can remain at home and does not need to come to school with the student.  After completing our study of the Middle Ages we will move into the Renaissance and Reformation.  We have much to learn from our past and from the men and women who lived during these time periods.  We have the privilege of spending the entire year learning about these incredible times in history.   We are excited about the geography portion of our class this year as well.  Students are to bring in their Rand McNally Schoolhouse Intermediate World Atlas.  These will be placed inside their geography binders and stay at school for their use in the classroom.  It is important that you have an atlas at home or you are proficient at finding maps on the internet.  Some home assignments will require the use of an atlas. We will continue to compile our geography notebooks in class throughout the year.  Parents will not see the final product until the year’s conclusion.  The Maps, Charts, and Graphs booklet should be placed in the front pocket of the student’s history binder and travel to and from school each class day.  One last component of our coursework this year is the American History Reads.  We have selected various books to be read at home on Fridays for “fun” reading about our American Heritage.  The assigned chapters are to be completed within time parameters but there will not be any formal assessment of the reading.  Please make sure your student is completing these assignments.  I will collect the signed assignment sheets beginning Tuesday, September 11th.   I am looking forward to a wonderful year with your student!
