Week Eight Assignment

10/30-11/1/2007

1.  Read and Respond:

      Tuesday:  Read Oliver Twist, chapters 34-37.  Write an intelligent, thought provoking question for each chapter.  I will use these for our reading quiz on Thursday!

                Thursday:   Read chapters 38-44.  Summarize each chapter in two or three sentences (due November 6).

 

2.  Vocabulary:

No vocabulary this week: instead, you will be tested on your memorized piece next Tuesday.

 

3.  Write: 

Write at least 500 words to describe and discuss one of the characters we have met so far.  Like any essay, this one should state a thesis—a sentence that sums up the central point about the character that you wish to make.  Be sure that you mention specific episodes from the story and quote at least three phrases.  You should not quote any long passage in this brief paper (due November 6).

 

4.  Finger Exercise:

      Bring your Kaplan SAT book to class.

 

5.  Very Important!!!  Memorize your selection for the open house.  Be prepared to recite it from memory on Tuesday, November 6.  You will receive a grade for it!!!

 

6.  A Lark, a lark!!!  I will be traveling back in time to visit the Dickens Faire at the Cow Palace in San Francisco on Saturday, December 8.  You are most cordially invited to join me there—I will be dressed in Victorian costume—you may do likewise…or not, as you please.  For information on the event, go to www.dickensfair.com.  Please let me know if this appeals to you!
