Assignment #22 March 4-6, 2008

 

1.  Read:

      Tuesday:  Read section 1 of chapter 30.  Answer the Read to Discover questions.  Be prepared for a quiz on the section. (Due Thursday, 3/6).

            Thursday:  Read sections 2-5 of chapter 30.  Answer the Read to Discover questions.  Be prepared for a quiz on these sections.  (Due Tuesday, 3/11).

 

&   Finish reading Bright Candles.  Write a one-two page essay in response to the book.  Begins by introducing the subject of the book and the main point the book makes.  Introduce the main character and his conflict; then briefly explain the development of the plot.  Comment on what the book has to say about courage, heroism, and patriotism.  You may conclude by commenting on the book’s impact on you (at least 500 words; due March 4).

 

 

2.  Primary Sources…  Find a friendly person (an “informant”) who remembers either the Great Depression or World War II.  Arrange to meet him or her for an interview—make a list of good questions about their experience.  Then sit down, ask your questions, listen carefully, and make copious notes.  Be sure to thank your friend before you toodle off to write your article.

     Now, write an essay about the person’s experience.   Your essay should have an introduction and a conclusion and should consist of a series of well-crafted paragraphs (at least 750 words; due March 11).

 

 

3.  Something More:  Read The Longest Day, chapters 3 -7.  (Due March 13).
