1. Read:  Read chapter six; take good study notes.  Write a question for each of the sub-sections.  (Due Thursday, October 25).

 

3.  Write:  Answer each of the following questions, incorporating specific facts (names, events, numbers, dates) to support your answers. (Due Thursday, October 25).

 

            1) Explain why the election of 1800 is sometimes called a “revolution.”  Describe the transition from the Federalists to the Republicans.

 

            2)  Summarize the ideas and values of Jeffersonian democracy.  Evaluate to what extent Jefferson’s actions as president were both consistent and inconsistent with those values.

 

            3)  Explain the significance of Marbury v. Madison.  Summarize the events that brought this case to the Supreme Court.  Explain how the Court ruled in this case.

 

            4)  Summarize how the United States acquired the Louisiana Purchase.  Explain the major obstacles which needed to be overcome.

 

            5)  Summarize how Jefferson was caught between the French and British governments during his second term.  Evaluate how he responded to these dilemmas.
