The War and Reconstruction

 

1. Read:  a) Read chapters fifteen and sixteen, “Reconstruction and the South.”

 b) Complete the study guide (extra credit). c) Optional:  Take the online quiz for sections 15 and 16 at longmanamericanhistory.com.

  Send the results of your quiz to me at mrsluoma@schoolofrhetoric.com.  You will be graded on this assignment!  Due Tuesday, January 15.

 

2.  Essay Questions:  Outline each of the following questions, incorporating ample specific factual evidence for each point.  Your outlines will be graded for the following:  1) a clear, succinct thesis (one sentence answer to the question); 2) three or four logical, clear main points, stated in simple sentences; 3) at least seven specific supporting facts, names, dates, places, or documents, briefly explained to support EACH main point. Due Tuesday, January 15.

 

1)  Summarize the effects of the Civil War on the lives of blacks.  Describe the roles that northern and southern blacks played during the war.

 

2)  Evaluate Lincoln’s major strengths and weaknesses as a wartime leader.  Summarize the major crises and decisions he faced.

 

3)  Describe the major battles of the was from Gettysburg to Appomattox Court House.  Explain the factors which account for the course of the last part of the war.

 

4)  Describe the major battles of the war from Fort Sumter to Gettysburg.  Explain the factors which account for the course of the war to this point.

 

5)  Compare and contrast the economic, political, and social experiences of the Union and Confederacy on the home front.  Explain the similarities and differences.

 

6)  Compare and contrast presidential and congressional Reconstruction.  In both cases, summarize both proposed measures and those measures actually enacted.

 

7)  Describe the major successes and failures of Reconstruction.  Evaluate the long-term results of Reconstruction for all Americans.

 

8)  Summarize the main features of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments.  Explain the purpose of each.  Analyze how successful each was in achieving its purpose. Evaluate how each affected the lives of average Americans then and now.

 

9)  Describe the economic, social and political conditions of black and white southerners during Reconstruction.  Summarize the major causes of the conditions.

 

10)  Describe the Compromise of 1877.  Explain its major causes and results.
