1. Read: Read chapter eleven. Answer each of the following questions in a healthy paragraph. You DO NOT need to outline this chapter (due December 6).

& Summarize the major characteristics of the democratic culture which emerged in the early nineteenth century.

& Summarize the major views of the transcendentalists. Describe the lives and writings of the most important transcendentalists.

& Explain how education and middle-class culture were transformed in the early nineteenth century by efforts to create a truly American and democratic society.

& Summarize the distinctively American characteristics in humor in the early nineteenth century.

2. Portfolio: Complete your first project. Be prepared to present it to the class on Tuesday, December 4.
