American Literature Assignment #7

1.  Reading:

This week we will continue our reading of Hawthorne’s novel.  Read chapters ten through eighteen, summarizing each concisely when you finish it.  (Due Tuesday, October 30).

 

2. Vocabulary:

1.  Omnipotent:  Having universal or unlimited power, authority or force; all-powerful.

2.  Orthography:  The art or study of correct spelling according to established usage.

3.  Oxidize:  To combine with oxygen; make into an oxide.

4.  Parabola:  A plane curve formed by the intersection of a right circular cone and a plane parallel to an element of the cone or by the locus of points equidistant from a fixed line and a fixed point not on the line.

5.  Paradigm:  A) One that serves as a pattern or model.  B) A set of assumptions, concepts, values, and practices that constitutes a way of seeing reality for the community that shares them, especially in an intellectual discipline.

6.  Pecuniary:  Of or relating to money; requiring payment of money.

7.  Photosynthesis:  The process by which green plants and certain other organisms synthesize carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water using sunlight as an energy source.

8.  Plagiarize:  To use and pass off the ideas or writings of another as one’s own.

9.  Plasma:  The clear yellowish fluid portion of blood or lymph in which cells are suspended.

10.  Polymer:  Any of numerous natural or synthetic compounds of usually high molecular weight consisting of repeated linked units.

 

3.  Writing:   Take a long, deep breath—exhale gustily, and rejoice with dancing.  There is no writing assignment this week.  Free at last!
