National Growing Pains

 

1. Read:  Read chapter eight, “Toward a National Economy.”  Outline the chapter. Due Tuesday, November 13.

 

2.  Essay Questions:  Outline each of the following questions, incorporating ample specific factual evidence for each point.  Your outlines will be graded for the following:  1) a clear, succinct thesis (one sentence answer to the question); 2) three or four logical, clear main points, stated in simple sentences; 3) at least seven specific supporting facts, names, dates, places, or documents, briefly explained to support EACH main point. Due Tuesday, November 13.

 

&   Describe the major technological and organizational developments which caused the growth of American industry in the early nineteenth century.

&   How did a working class develop in the early nineteenth century?

&   Analyze how the economic changes of the early nineteenth century affected the lives of slaves.

&   Summarize how America’s transportation system changed in the early nineteenth century.  Explain how those changes affected Americans in different sections of the country.

&   Evaluate the role of the Marshall court in promoting or retarding the growth of a national economy in the early nineteenth century.

 

4.  Something Lovely and More:  Read The Summer of 1787: The Men Who Invented the Constitution, by David O. Stewart, chapters 13-15.  Write 100 words to bring one of this week’s characters to life for me (due November 13).

 

5.  Test:  You may expect the next test—chapters 6 and 7—on Thursday, November 15.  Huzzah…
