National Growing Pains

 

1. Read:  Read chapter seven, “National Growing Pains.”  Outline the chapter. Due Tuesday, November 6.

 

2.  Essay Questions:  Outline each of the following questions, incorporating ample specific factual evidence for each point.  Your outlines will be graded for the following:  1) a clear, succinct thesis (one sentence answer to the question); 2) three or four logical, clear main points, stated in simple sentences; 3) at least seven specific supporting facts, names, dates, places, or documents, briefly explained to support EACH main point. Due Tuesday, November 6.

 

&   Summarize the factors that led the United States to declare war on England in the War of 1812.  Evaluate what the United States gained as a result of the war.

&   Describe the “national growing pains,” and explain how they affected the nation between 1808 and 1823.

&   Describe the major achievements of American foreign policy from 1814 to 1823.

&   Explain why tariff policy became a controversial sectional issue in the early 19th century.  Describe how each of the sections tended to view tariffs.  What conflicts arose over the differences among the sections?

&   Describe the sectional divisions which led to the Missouri Compromise.  Explain how those issues were settled.

 

4.  Something Lovely and More:  Read The Summer of 1787: The Men Who Invented the Constitution, by David O. Stewart, chapters 11-12.  Write at least 150 words explaining “the Ipswich Miracle”—what it was, how it came about, and why it was considered miraculous.  Due Tuesday, November 6.

 

5.  Test:  You may expect the next test—chapters 6 and 7—on Thursday, November 15.  Huzzah…
