Week Two:

This week we begin to make the acquaintance of the various Europeans who were drawn to America for a variety or reasons—searching for gold, for adventure, for land, or for religious freedom. Our reading will introduce us to who they were, where they came from, where they settled, and why they came. In chapter two we will see the enduring themes of American identity, economy, and regional differences begin to develop.

Sept. 10 Write response to Smith, Winthrop, Hutchinson (in class).

Sept. 11 Read Carnes, chapter two. In one to two pages, make yourself some study notes. This time, divide your notes into four main sections: I. Spanish Settlement; II The Chesapeake and Southern Colonies; III The Northern, Puritan Colonies; IV The Middle Colonies. Again, use the sub-headings to organize your notes (due Thursday, 9/13).

Sept. 13 Develop a chart explaining the motivation for founding, financial basis, and political, social, and economic organization of each of the three regions of English colonies (in class). Make a chart in which you indicate the nature of the colony (joint stock, proprietary, royal, or charter), the degree of self-government, and economic base. Write one page in which you discuss what all the colonies had in common, and what differences existed. Speculate on which differences may have persisted and why (due Tuesday, 9/18)
