Assignment #4: October 1,
2007
"Federalism"
1. Read: Read chapter three in American Government: Continuity and Change. Annotate your book, marking central ideas in each section, circling key words and definitions, and signifying ideas that you find interesting or controversial. Make one or two pages of study notes in a form useful to you for review. Due Monday, October 8.
*Write definitions and explanations of the terms listed on page 121 (you may do this in the context of your chapter notes; if you do, highlight the definitions). Be prepared for a quiz on the terms on Monday, October 15.
2. Wait--Don't Go Away!!! Choose one of the issues relating to federalism raised in this chapter and search for information on both sides of the issue. Some of these include abortion, the death penalty, homeland security, No Child Left Behind, speed limits, environmental regulations... Summarize what you find and state your position, given the information you find. Remember that you are concerned with the degree to which the federal government appropriates authority that some believe belongs to the states. Look for commentary that relates specifically to this question.
(One to two pages; due by e-mail, Wednesday, October 10).
BTW You should read the chapter before you cruise off into cyber-space, chasing down the federalistos.
