1.  Read:  Read chapter 18 on Economic Policy.  Annotate the chapters.  (Due March 31).  Expect a take-home test on March 31 on chapters 17 and 18.

Locate and take the quiz on-line—send me your results.  Answer the following questions and define the terms on a separate piece of paper; your responses should be thorough and analytical.  The questions should be answered in complete paragraphs—they should begin with clear topic sentences.  (Due March 31).

4)  Discuss the impact of the Wagner Act on American workers.

5)  Discuss the Environmental Protection Agency.

6)  Define and discuss deregulation.  Why did it become popular in the 1970s and 1980s, and what impact has it had?

8)  Explain the Gramm-Rudmann-Hollings Act.

9)  Compare the philosophies of Adam Smith and John Maynard Keynes.

 

ESSAY.  Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

10)  Discuss the budget process.

11)  What sorts of social regulation occurred in the 1960s and 1970s?

12)  The New Deal brought about a number of reforms in how the national government dealt with the issue of economic regulation.  Discuss New Deal policy relating to financial reforms, agriculture, labor, and industry regulations.

13)  How and why has the national government been involved in environmental protection? Give specific examples.

14)  Discuss the Federal Reserve System.

15)  Why did the United States have budget surpluses from 1998 to 2002?  Why did deficits return in 2003?  What are the prospects for achieving a balanced budget again in the near future?

 

2.  Current Events: Once again, read the news—be prepared to take a quiz next week on events of significance in the news.  Be sure you are familiar with what is going on in the primary elections, the war in Iraq, the economy, etc.
