6th Grade Language Arts Assignments

Week 22 – March 3, 2008

Note to Parents and Students:  We plan to visit the local public library on Thursday, March 13 (next week) during our class time at school to look for resources to begin our research reports after break.  Please return the signed permission forms to school this week.  I am not allowed to take students off campus without parental permission during the school day.  Applications for library cards (if you do not have a card yet) should be turned in to any library in the San Jose system in person (you can also complete these online, but must still appear in person to receive the card).  They will not issue a card to a minor without the responsible adult in attendance.  It should take you only 5 minutes.  However, your student can use any card that belongs in your family if this saves you a trip to the library.  Thank you for your help!

LC

Read the blue box at the top of p. 222.  Mark any sentences we didn’t do in class, and diagram at least #1-6.  Have a parent correct them.  If you get any wrong, diagram the rest as well for extra practice.

Writing

Using your own book summary (from last Friday) and the book review chart with your assertion/opinion statement and examples (completed Monday), write a sloppy copy or first draft of your book report on Roll of Thunder.  If this is difficult for you, bring any questions to class to discuss tomorrow.

Treasure Island

Find your copy of Treasure Island and read the Introduction and Chapter 1.  This is a quick, thrilling adventure story that I think you’ll all enjoy.  Please don’t get behind right at the start!

Bible Memory

Memorize John 13:34 today.

CS3

Read pp. 456-457 in the GCB.  Do #1-6 on p. 61.

Poetry

Last chance to recite “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus in class tomorrow.  Spend 5 minutes working on the 24-line poem you chose from the handouts.  Memorize at least the first 4 lines today.

Don’t forget to bring your permission slip tomorrow for next week’s field trip!

LC

Read the long blue box on p. 223 and the yellow and blue boxes on pp. 224-225.  Do Think A, B, and C on pp. 224-225.  Answer Write D orally.   Have a parent correct your work.

Writing

Revise your first draft of your book report using the list of questions handed out in class.  Be your own editor!  Do your best work!

Treasure Island

Read chapters 2-4 today.  From chapter 1, answer:  Who is telling the story?  Why did the “old salt” pay Jim a four-penny each month?  How is the author arousing your interest in the one-legged man?  How is the author using foreshadowing in the story?

Bible Memory

Memorize John 13:35 today.  Recite John 13:34-35 to a parent and have them sign it off on your check sheet.

CS3

Read pp. 458-461 in the GCB.  Do #7-10 on p. 61.

Poetry

Keep working on memorizing lines 5-8 of your poem (“Nation’s Strength”, “Ironsides”, or “Solitude”).

LC

Read the blue box at the top of p. 226 and do Think A and B on pp. 226-227.  Have a parent correct your work.

Writing

Using your notes and revisions, carefully write your “final draft” of your book report on Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry.  Gather together your answers to the reading response questions for each chapter, and any other notes.  Bring it all to school tomorrow to turn in.

Treasure Island

Read chapters 5 and 6 to finish Part I:  the Old Buccaneer.  Complete the vocabulary section for Part One (pp. 3-6) handed out in class.

Bible Memory

Memorize Isaiah 53:4 (death of the Messiah) today as handed out in class.  This shows up on your check sheet back in the Old Testament passages and is the only one we skipped.  Use it as preparation for Good Friday and Easter next week.

CS3

Complete Lesson 18 including the memory verse questions on p. 60.  Catch up any lessons you are behind in, and bring to class tomorrow to turn in for grading.  I will correct it and return it to you on Thursday before we leave for the library.

Poetry

Memorize lines 1-8 of the poem you chose.  You should know at least half of the poem before break begins next week.
