If you did not recite it yesterday, review “The New Colossus.” Read over these three poems: “A Nation’s Strength” by Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Old Ironsides” by Oliver Wendell Holmes, and “Solitude” by Emma Wilcox (all handed out in your poetry section). Choose your favorite to memorize – they are each 24 lines long. |

Roll of Thunder |
In light of the book you just finished reading, go to www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/mlkihaveadream.htm and watch Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I have a Dream” speech online. This is the best copy I could find of this 17-minute video. If you can, pay attention to all of it, but at least watch the first 5 minutes, then if you must, skip to the 10-minute mark and watch the end to get a feel for this outstanding moment in American history. What impressions do you have? Come to class ready to discuss it. |
