6th Grade Language Arts Assignments

Week 11 – November 26, 2007

Wednesday, November 28, 2007

LC – Read the blue box on p. 264 and review the common prepositions listed at the bottom of the page.  Do Think A and B on page 265.

WS1  Do Skill Builder Day One on p. 9-7.  Read pp. 9-1 and 9-2 and choose an animal to write about.  Look up facts on the Internet or in a book about this animal (KEEP TRACK OF YOUR SOURCES), and begin filling in the Fact-Gathering Worksheet on pp. 9-3 through 9-5.

Rifles – Read chapter 21. You are approaching the climax of the book.  Why do you think it is titled Rifles for Watie?  Write your answer down on a sheet of paper.

Bible Memory – Review the books of the prophets for 5 or 10 minutes.

CS3 – Be sure you bring this to class for me to look over tomorrow if you did not turn it in to me on Tuesday.

Poetry – Be prepared to recite “Battle Hymn” in class tomorrow.  Read over Emily Dickinson’s “I Like to See it Lap the Miles.”

Friday, November 30, 2007

LC – Read the blue box on the top of p. 163 and do Think A and Think B (be careful on these that you understand the difference between a PN and a DO) on pp. 163-164.

WS1 – Do Skill Builder Day Two on p. 9-8 and 9-9.  You may do section A aloud with a parent and have them initial it, but write answers to Section B.  Be careful that your subject immediately follows the participial phrase in each.  Thoroughly complete your Fact-Gathering Worksheet.

Rifles   Read chapters 22-23.  Jeff finally makes up his mind about which side he is on in these chapters.  Below yesterday’s answer, write down what he chooses and whether you agree with his choice.  Why or why not?  What made it a hard choice for him?  List as many answers as you can.

Bible Memory – Recite all the books (or at least the Prophets) of the Old Testament to a parent in order if you can.  Have them sign this off on your checksheet.

CS3 – Read pp. 406-407.  Do Q #’s 5-11 on p. 27.  Locate on the map on p. 35 the places listed in #12.

Poetry – Look up the Vocabulary Words from “I Like to See it Lap the Miles” (prodigious, supercilious, pare, Boanerges, docile, and omnipotent) and write down definitions on a piece of paper to turn in.  Memorize the first stanza.

Monday, December 3, 2007

LC – Read through the blue box on the top of p. 165.  On a separate piece of paper, diagram #1-10.  Have a parent check and review them with you as well as #11-20 (completed in class).  Do you understand this?

WS1   Write your “sloppy copy” of Lesson 9 “Writing a Factual Paragraph” using the notes you have collected on your Fact-Gathering Worksheet as a guide.  It should be as clear, descriptive, and interesting as your previous papers!

Rifles   Read chapter 24.  If you completed this reading before Thanksgiving, review it again as we come to the end of the book.

Bible Memory – Begin memorizing Isaiah 9:6-7.

CS3   Read pp. 408-410.  Do # 1-2 on p. 29.

Poetry – Try to use the words “prodigious” and “supercilious” in your conversation at dinner tonight.  Review the first stanza and read through all of “I Like to See it Lap the Miles” aloud at least three times.  Does it all make sense to you?  Bring your questions to class.
