Mrs. Harbman’s 6th Grade Language
Arts Assignments
Week 1 – September 4, 2007
Welcome to this year’s 6th grade Language Arts class! Excuse me for being wordy this first week or two while I clarify a few things about class. I trust that somewhere in your home you have a thesaurus that your student can use. If not, please look into getting one sometime in the next week. A small copy that can be carried to class would be helpful. If you are purchasing one, consider a Notebook version that can be inserted in the student’s binder and kept handy for reference. I’m looking forward to our work together this year!

A note to new parents: Live Oak Academy has standardized its Bible Memorization program and all students in grades 2-7 memorize the same verses at the same time so that families can work together. The program is on a repeating 2-year cycle, so the verses the students learned in 2nd grade (usually a shorter version) they will see again in 4th and learn a third time in 6th grade. This repetition is an aid to memory, so that the verses will truly be hidden in their hearts. However, if this is the first year that your student has seen these verses, the number of them may be daunting. We will drill them in class, but it is the parent who will sign off which verses are actually memorized at home. Students will not be penalized academically for falling behind, but a reward system will be put in place for those who memorize certain numbers of verses (one level for 10 verses, one for 20 verses, etc.) If your student is unfamiliar with these verses, he or she may tend to feel overwhelmed by the memorization program. Please do work on these verses with your students at home, but assure them that they can learn them at their own pace – being encouraged to work ahead if they already know this week’s verses, or to take additional time for unfamiliar or difficult material.
