Fifth Grade Math - Final Project:

The task for this project is to estimate the cost of materials to recover a floor in your house with new tile, carpet, or other material of your choice.

1)      Measure a room you wish to use for the project.  For challenge, pick a room that is not rectangular.

2)      Double-check your measurements.

3)      Make a scale drawing of the floor area.

4)      Compute the area and the perimeter of the room.

5)      Choose a material to recover the floor.  For your research, you can use newspaper or magazine ads, the internet, or you can visit a hardware or flooring store with your parents.

6)      For your material, record the price per unit, the dimensions, and the number per box, as appropriate.

7)      If possible, get a picture or sample to include with your estimate.

8)      Compute how many units you will need to purchase to recover the floor.  Round up as necessary.  Will you need to buy whole boxes or can you buy by the piece?  Will partial pieces be needed?

9)      Compute the cost of the material.

10)  Prepare cost estimate for your customer – include your drawing, information about the material, and calculations.

Due – last day of class – May 22 – be prepared to share.
