Live Oak Academy
Latin
 2007-2008

Dear Parents,
We are privileged to have your children in Live Oak's Latin program this year. We promise you we will try to work hard together.  Lord willing, we will enjoy ourselves too.
It's a good idea to spend short amounts of time studying Latin even on school days in the afternoon or evening. Cramming is not the key to success in the study of Latin. Success in Latin comes from diligent and consistent study of new concepts as well as constant review of previous vocabulary and grammar.           Assignments will be very consistent and specific.
We will drill the Latin grammar frequently in all classes to ensure that the proper foundation is laid and sufficiently reinforced for translation work.  We will focus on a systematic study of the Latin grammar.  We will enhance that study with interesting translation exercises based on Roman life and history, on Christian prayers and verses from the Latin Bible, and on quotations and sayings from the Philosophers.
Additionally, we study the Famous Men of Rome, covering one-half of the text in Primer I and the second half in Primer II.
Your child will learn more of what we expect as we move along.  We will get to know your children better and better in the coming weeks.  Your encouragement and support at home is essential.  Please help them to budget their time wisely and to put their best foot forward in class.
There will be regular quizzes and tests (to be administered at home) in addition to their class work to be done on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  Below is a general idea of the size of the workload.

Primer I:        50 minutes at home, 3 days per week
Primer II:       50 minutes at home, 3 days per week

Texts include:
Latina Christiana I Student Book (Primer I)
Latina Christiana II Student Book (Primer II)
Famous Men of Rome
Famous Men of Rome Study Guide

Thank you for the privilege of assisting your children to enjoy the many benefits of the study of Latin.

Sincerely,

Chris Duckering and Ellen Garrett
