Spelling
C Assignment
November 15th (Week 10)
Wednesday,
November 16th:
Spelling and Penmanship Assignments:
Continue to drill all seventy basic phonograms
using the following two methods:
Please focus on the following phonograms: ur,
ow, ar, ch, igh, oi, ee, oo, tch, oy, ui, gn.
1) The
parent should show the student each phonogram card, and the student should
pronounce all the sounds that phonogram makes. Repeat this drill once each day.
2) The
parent should dictate the sounds each phonogram makes and the student should
write the phonograms (neatly, in cursive, using only lower-case letters). Make certain the student is saying all of the sounds of the
phonogram as he or she writes it.
Repeat this drill once each day.
□ Phonogram Drill: Continue using the two methods explained above. Please make
note of phonograms your child is having trouble with and pull those cards for
extra drill. If your child as
mastered them, you may reduce the number of drills per day. The goal is to keep your child’s skills
sharp with constant review.
□ Drill rule numbers 7, 10, 14, 16, 22, 24, and
25. This may be done orally. Please read the rule aloud and have the student
repeat it. This should be done
twice before the review of the words themselves.
Note: These rules may be found in the student’s
Language Arts binder in a plastic sheet.
The page is entitled, Spelling Rules Phrased for Ease in Teaching at
Live Oak Academy. A
link for this page may also be found on the Classes page of the
website. Click on Sanseri/Spalding. On the third line from the top click on Spelling
class resources for students and parents are posted here. Then click on the PDF
labeled Complete Spelling Rules.
□ Review words 561-580 of Section L-3, Page 74,
of WISE Guide for Spelling. Have the student write the words as you
dictate them. The student should
be “sounding out” the words as he or she writes them. There is no need to mark
the words as they are marked on page 75.
These markings were done in class in their spelling notebooks. If the student is trouble spelling the
word, you may remark it for practice and discuss the specific rule/rules
referred to next to the marked word in the WISE Guide for Spelling. . Review any words spelled incorrectly on
previous spelling tests.
□
Penmanship: Complete “Day One” and
“Day Two” of Lesson 10 from A Reason for Handwriting E.
Parents, please make certain that your student
is doing his or her best work in this book. Good penmanship takes time. Don’t allow your child to rush.
Friday, November 17th:
□ Phonogram Drill: Continue to drill all seventy
basic phonograms using the following methods explained above. Focus the
following phonograms: kn, ow, th, ng, tch, er, dge, ew, ou, ai, ay, ar, ar,
ey, ph, wr, and ie.
□ Drill rules numbers 5, 6, 7, 17, and 23 from
page entitled Spelling Rules Phrased for Ease in Teaching at Live Oak
Academy
as explained above.
□ Review words 581-600 of Section L-4, Page 76,
of WISE Guide for Spelling.
Review any words spelled incorrectly on previous spelling tests. Have the student write the words as you
dictate them. The student should
be “sounding out” the words as he or she writes them. Once student has mastered previous incorrect words, you may
discontinue the extra drill.
The parent should dictate the first time,
check for errors, and dictate a second time.
□ Penmanship: Complete “Day Three” and “Day Four” of Lesson 10 from A Reason for
Handwriting E.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!! You have a week off.
Below is the assignment for Monday, November 28th.
Monday, November 28th:
□ Phonogram Drill: Continue using the two methods explained above.
□ Administer test on phonograms your child has
not yet mastered.
□ Test words 561-600 of sections L-3 and L-4,
pages 74 and 76 of WISE Guide for Spelling. (If your child is part of the Monday
1/2 day program, the test will be administered at Live Oak by Mrs. Rose.) Have
the student write the words as you dictate them. The student should be “sounding out” the words as he or she
writes them. Mark the words
spelled incorrectly, and write the number missed at the top of the page. Submit the test to Mrs. Rose on
Tuesday, November 29th. Make
certain it is labeled with the student’s name and the date.
Add any words spelled incorrectly on the test to
the list of words requiring additional review. This list should be kept in the student binder where it is easily
accessible. (I find it helpful to insert the list in a plastic sheet protector,
so I can quickly locate it.)
Continue to review these words daily with your student until he or she
demonstrates mastery.
□ Write the scripture verse from “Day Four”
Lesson 10 on your choice of the scripture border sheets. Please label the sheet with your name,
and date, and give the completed paper to Mrs. Rose on Tuesday, November 29th.
