Spelling C Assignment
September  27, 2005  (Week 4)

Wednesday, September 28:

Continue to drill the A-Z phonograms introduced in class plus sh, th, oo, ee, er, oy, oi, ch, ow, ou, ay, ai, ea, or, ui, ew, ng, ar, wh, and aw. Add au, oe, oa, ed, and ck for a total of 51.   Use the following two methods:

Use the following two methods:

1)      The parent should show the student each phonogram card, and the student should pronounce all the sounds that phonogram makes.  Make certain that he or she says the sounds exactly as indicated on the back of the phonogram cards.  If you are not certain of the exact sounds, listen to the audiotape.  Parents may prompt the student using the instructions on the back of the cards if necessary.  Repeat this drill at least three times each day.

2)      The parent should dictate the sounds each phonogram makes and the student should write the phonograms twice (neatly, in cursive, and then in manuscript, using only lower-case letters). Make certain the student is saying all of the sounds of the phonogram as he or she writes it.  Use the penmanship book A Reason for Handwriting E as a guide for letter formation.  Try not to show the student the phonogram cards. The goal is for the student to be able to write the phonograms from dictation only.  Repeat this drill at least twice each day and file the completed drills in the section labeled “Spalding/Penmanship” in the student’s Langauge Arts binder.  If the student does not have a divider with the necessary label, please add one. Be certain that the student’s name and the date are written on the paper.

Penmanship Assignments:

Wednesday, September 28:

□ Penmanship:  Complete “Day One” and “Day Two” of Lesson 4 from A Reason for Handwriting E.

Parents, please make certain that your student is doing his or her best work in this book.  Good penmanship takes time.  Don’t allow your child to rush.

 Friday, September 30:

□ Phonogram Drill:  Continue using the two methods explained above.  Add phonograms er, ur, ir, wor, and ear for a total of 56.

Remember to write first, neatly, in cursive and then in manuscript.

□ Penmanship:  Complete “Day Three” and “Day Four” of Lesson 4 from A Reason for Handwriting E.

Monday, October 3rd:

□ Phonogram Drill:  Continue using the two methods explained above

□ Administer test on Phonograms thru “ear” for a total of 56.

□ Penmanship:

Write the scripture verse from “Day Four” Lesson 4 on your choice of the scripture border sheets (located after page 74 of your penmanship book.)  You may color the border sheet if you wish, but it is not necessary.  Please label the sheet with your name, class, and date and give the completed paper to Mrs. Rose on Tuesday, October 4th.

Parents, please note:  If your child is learning cursive for the first time, it may be a little frustrating for him/her for the next few weeks.  Please encourage him/her to persevere. It will get easier with practice.
