Dear Parents,

Please accompany your child while he completes the lessons this week.  I will be introducing “solving for an unknown” in Lesson 8 as well as multiplying by 9’s in lesson 9 of the Gamma book.  Please watch the Gamma video of these 2 lessons for teaching these particular lessons at home.  I have instructed the students in class.  Lesson 8 is an introduction to division, so I recommend that the children build the problem using blocks as the video suggests.   Today in class the children expressed confusion with an Algebraic equation being presented such as 2A = 12.   In solving this problem, if you do three things the student can understand this easily.

1.    Minimize the capital letter ( it can be anything such as a smiley face, or a X)

 2.   Ask your child this question, “How many 2’s does it take to make 12?

 3.  Have your child build the problem by counting by 2’s using the blocks until they reach 12.                                                       Mrs. Owen
