Live Oak Academy

Second Grade Language Arts

2006-2007

Course Description:

The instructor will teach language arts with the purpose of assisting the student with comprehension of language in such a way that the student will ultimately anticipate and secure a better discernment of God’s written Word, the Bible.  Literature, recitation, grammar, composition and Bible memory will be taught to the mastery level, which will also facilitate the student in the proclamation of His truth.

The student will be introduced to and continue developing a workable knowledge of basic grammar principles: capitalization rules, punctuation at the end of sentences, word distinctions (suffixes; prefixes; abbreviations; compound words; rhyming words; antonyms and synonyms; singular, plural, and  possessive forms; contractions), word usage, alphabetizing and other dictionary skills.  These concepts will reinforce the Spalding “Spell to Write and Read” program and be applied to the writing of complete sentences, questions, exclamations, and the development of a paragraph.  The student will be introduced to a differentiation between narrative writing (story telling) and exposition (informative).  Student writing will include short compositions of both.  Recitation will include oral delivery of the Bible and poetic selections that reflect expression and fluency.  Reading and literature will allow the student to recognize different types of literature (e.g.-fiction, fantasy, fable, etc.), learn basic literary elements (e.g.-plot, theme, character, and setting), as well as gain knowledge of different times, places, and aspects of human character.

Texts: selected readers, novels, and read-alouds; ABeka Grammar 2; McCall-Crabbs Standard Lessons in Reading, Just Write exercises, Reading-Thinking Skill sheets, various selections from the Bible.

Evaluations: oral drill and response to inquiry as well as written comprehension questions over literature; recitations from various Bible and poetry selections; periodic assessment of McCall-Crabbs Standard Lessons; worksheets; some quizzes.

Homework: M/W/F/weekend = 30-45 minutes per unit/day
