Please access Live Oak website to print out Live Oak spelling rules for your reference in teaching at home.  Students are learning Rules 1 -5.

¨       Spelling Assignment:  Continue to drill the phonograms a through z, sh, th, oo, ee, er, oy, oi, ch, ow, ou, ay, ai, ea, or, ui, ew, ng, ar , wh, aw, au and add ck, oe, and oa.   Review words missed on 11/21 or 11/28  spelling test and practice writing words 41-50.   Use the following two methods:

1)        The parent should show the student each phonogram card, and the student should pronounce all the sounds that phonogram makes.  Make certain that he or she says the sounds exactly as indicated on the back of the phonogram cards.  Parents may prompt the student using the instructions on the back of the cards if necessary.  Repeat this drill at least 3 times with the phonograms needing prompting.  It may take more than one seating for this to be completed.

2)        The parent should dictate the sounds each phonogram makes and the student should write the phonograms (neatly, in manuscript, using only lower-case letters).   Make certain the student is saying all of the sounds of the phonogram as he or she writes it.  Try not to show the student the phonogram cards.  Repeat this drill at least 3 times for those missed.

3)        Please practice the spelling words in the same manner.

¨       Penmanship assignment:  Complete lines 3-4 p.12 in Copybook 1. Also, have student write their proper name with a capital letter and in their best penmanship.  The parent should use the back of the phonogram card as a guide to observe the student for correct manuscript penmanship. Parents, please make certain that your student is doing her best work.  Good penmanship takes time.  Don’t allow your child to rush.  Please bring penmanship book to class for review.

¨       Literature:  Read aloud to your child from quality literature.  Aim for at least 30 minutes per day.  Please refer to classical book list to assist in choosing books suitable for your child.

¨       If your student is able to read independently, have him or her read aloud to you as well from a level appropriate for her.

¨       Poetry assignment: Memorize the poem First Christmas with child.

¨       Grammar assignment:  In First Language  Lessons by S. Wise, complete lesson  20 orally with your child.  Also, have child write their own proper name starting with a capital letter (this assignment listed under penmanship).
