Spelling and Language Arts Assignments

First Grade

Phonogram Assignment:  Continue to drill the phonograms a through z, sh, th, oo, ee, er, oy, oi, ch, ow, ou, ay, ai, ea, or, ui, ew, ng, ar, wh, aw, au,ck, oe, oa, ed, ur, ir and add wor, and ear.  Use the following two methods: 

1)        The parent should show the student each phonogram card, and the student should pronounce all the sounds that phonogram makes.  Make certain that he or she says the sounds exactly as indicated on the back of the phonogram cards.  Parents may prompt the student using the instructions on the back of the cards if necessary.  Repeat this drill with the phonograms needing prompting.  It may take more than one seating for this to be completed.

 

2)        The parent should dictate the sounds each phonogram makes and the student should write the phonograms neatly, in manuscript, using only lower-case letters.   Please continue to dictate A-Z because letter reversals continue to occur in the class.   Make certain the student is saying all of the sounds of the phonogram as he or she writes it. 

 

Spelling Assignment:  Review words #71-75,  all, my, be, go,  do and any other words missed on previous tests.  Please practice the spelling words in the same manner as explained above in phonogram assignment.

1)      Live Oak Spelling rules:  Chant 1, 2, 4, 5.  Begin to learn 7, the final silent E’s.

Penmanship assignment:  Copybook 1; complete p. 16  line 1-5.  Instruct and observe student to start at the top of each letter.

Optional:  practice lowercase letters most commonly reversed:  b, d, p, q, s, z.

     Language Arts Assignment: 

¨       Literature:  Read aloud to your child from quality literature for 30 minutes per day.  Please refer to classical book list to assist in choosing books. 

¨       Reading:  Start Pathway reader titled First Steps.  Read The New Horse and have student read Bess.  The parent is to read from the small print and student is to read large print.   The student may read Bob books; however, phonograms in Pathway readers have been taught.

¨       Optional:  If student is able to read independently, have her read aloud spelling cards written on 3 X 5 cards and organize a complete sentence using them.  Please make cards for new words as they are assigned each week.   

¨       Poetry assignment: Begin learning lines 1-4 of   A Little Elf  with  student.

¨       Grammar assignment:  In First Language  Lessons by S. Wise, complete lesson  35 orally with your child.  

¨       Begin to memorize these additional noun chants:

  A noun is the name of a person, place, thing or idea.

 A common noun is the name of any person, place, thing, or idea.

A proper noun is the name of a particular person, place or thing.

(A proper noun always starts with a capital letter.)

Language Arts Assignment

¨       Literature:  Read aloud to your child from quality literature.  Aim for at least 30 minutes per day.  Please refer to classical book list to assist in choosing books suitable for your child.  Have child draw the main character on 3 X 5 card for story given in orange folder

¨       Reading:  In Pathway reader titled First Steps, Read The Little Wagon and have student read Come and Ride.  The parent is to read from the small print and student is to read large print out loud to you.   The student may read Bob books; however, phonograms in Pathway readers have been taught.   

¨       Optional:  If student is able to read independently, have her read aloud spelling cards written on 3 X 5 cards and organize a complete sentence using them.  Please make cards for new words as they are assigned.   

¨       Poetry: Begin learning lines 1-4 A Little Elf with child.

¨       Grammar:  In First Language Lessons by S. Wise, complete lesson 36.  When you have child narrate the story to you, write the story in her own words on the story paper provided. Tomorrow, have student draw pictures according to narration on story paper. 

¨       Say noun chant 3 times: See additions to chant on Wednesday.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Monday, January 23,

 

Phonogram Assignment:  Continue to drill the phonograms a through z, sh, th, oo, ee, er, oy, oi, ch, ow, ou, ay, ai, ea, or, ui, ew, ng, ar, wh, aw, au,ck, oe, oa, ed, ur, ir and add wor, and ear.  Use the previous two methods listed above.

 

Spelling Assignment: Take spelling test on words 71-80.  Please turn on Tuesday via orange folder.

  • Live Oak Spelling rules: Chant 1, 2, 4, 5. Begin to learn 7, the final silent E’s. 

¨       Penmanship assignment:  Copybook 1, complete p. 17 line 1-5.  Instruct and observe student to start at top of each letter. 

  Optional:  practice lowercase letters most commonly reversed:  b, d, p, q, s, z.

¨       Literature:  Read aloud to your child from quality literature for at least 30 minutes per day.  Please refer to the classical book list to assist in choosing books suitable for your child.

¨       Optional Have child draw the main character whom is labeled on the 3 X 5 card given in orange folder. Return them in the orange folders so they can be pasted in their Character notebooks.

¨       Reading:  In Pathway reader titled First Steps, Read  Rides, Rides, Rides  and have student read Rides, Rides, Rides.  The parent is to read from the small print and student is to read the large print aloud to you.    

¨       Optional:   If student is able to read independently, have her read aloud spelling cards written on 3 X 5 cards and organize a complete sentence using them.  Please make cards for new words as they are assigned.   

¨       Poetry assignment: Begin learning lines 1-4 of   A Little Elf with student.

¨       Grammar assignment:  In First Language Lessons by S. Wise, complete lesson  37.  On the narrated story paper from Friday draw the pictures. Orally, review the nouns, but it is not necessary to label them nouns.  By the end of the year we will compile the narrated stories into a nice book. 

¨       Say noun chant 3 times: See additions to chant on Wednesday.
