Spelling and Language Arts Assignments

First Grade

¨       Spelling Assignment:  Continue to drill the phonograms a through z, sh, th, oo, ee, er, oy, oi, ch, ow, ou, ay, ai, ea, or, ui, ew, ng, ar, wh, aw, au,ck, oe, oa, and add ed.   Review any words missed on previous spelling tests.   Use the following two methods:

 

1)        The parent should show the student each phonogram card, and the student should pronounce all the sounds that phonogram makes.  Make certain that he or she says the sounds exactly as indicated on the back of the phonogram cards.  Parents may prompt the student using the instructions on the back of the cards if necessary.  Repeat this drill at least 3 times with the phonograms needing prompting.  It may take more than one seating for this to be completed.

 

2)        The parent should dictate the sounds each phonogram makes and the student should write the phonograms neatly, in manuscript, using only lower-case letters.   Make certain the student is saying all of the sounds of the phonogram as he or she writes it.  Try not to show the student the phonogram cards.  Repeat this drill at least 3 times for those missed. 

3)        Please practice the spelling words in the same manner.

  • Live Oak Spelling rules:  Have student chant rule 1 -3 three times.

¨       Penmanship assignment:  Teach capital letters on p. 16 in Copybook 1. Please observe this activity to assure proper letter formation.  Also, have student write their proper name including the last name.  Please bring penmanship book to class for review.

¨       Literature:  Read aloud to your child from quality literature.  Aim for at least 30 minutes per day.  Please refer to classical book list to assist in choosing books suitable for your child.

¨       Reading:  If student is able to read independently, have her read aloud spelling cards written on 3 X 5 cards and organize a complete sentence using them.  Please make cards for new words as they are assigned.   

¨       Poetry assignment: Memorize the poem First Christmas with child.

¨       Grammar assignment:  In First Language  Lessons by S. Wise, complete lesson  29 orally with your child.  Also, have child write their own proper name starting with a capital letter including their last name. (listed previously under penmanship.

¨       Say noun chant 3 times:

 A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea.
