Spelling and Language Arts Assignments

First Grade

Phonogram Assignment:  Continue to drill the phonograms a through z, sh, th, oo, ee, er, oy, oi, ch, ow, ou, ay, ai, ea, or, ui, ew, ng, ar, wh, aw, au, ck, oe, oa, ed, ur, ir, wor, ear, igh, ie, and add tch, si, ci, ti.  Use the following two methods: 

1)        The parent should show the student each phonogram card, and the student should pronounce all the sounds that phonogram makes.  Make certain that he or she says the sounds exactly as indicated on the back of the phonogram cards.  Parents may prompt the student using the instructions on the back of the cards if necessary.  Repeat this drill with the phonograms needing prompting.  It may take more than one seating for this to be completed.

 

2)        The parent should dictate the sounds each phonogram makes and the student should write the phonograms neatly, in manuscript, using only lower-case letters.   Please continue to dictate A-Z because letter reversals continue to occur in the class.   Make certain the student is saying all of the sounds of the phonogram as he or she writes it. 

 

Spelling Assignment:  Review words #101-110 and other words missed on section D previous tests.  Please practice the spelling words in the same manner as explained above in phonogram assignment.

1)      Live Oak Spelling rules:  Chant 1, 2, 4, 5. Begin to learn 7, the final silent E’s.

  Penmanship assignment:  Copybook 1; complete p. 24. 

  Optional Assignment:  Teach capital letter H on page of Printing Fun booklet.

     Language Arts Assignment: 

¨       Literature:  Read aloud to your child from quality literature for 30 minutes per day.  Please refer to classical book list to assist in choosing books. 

¨       Reading:  First Steps:  Continue to read a new story each day.  Do not tell the student the word prior to her sounding the word out. Show them the familiar phonograms if having trouble.  

¨       Optional:  1. Use the 3X5 spelling cards to play bingo.   2.  If student is able to read independently, have her read aloud spelling cards written on 3 X 5 cards and organize a complete sentence using them.  3.  Dictate a simple sentence either from Wise or Sanseri.  4.  Make 3X5 cards for newly assigned words.

¨       Poetry assignment: Review A Little Elf and learn the first stanza of The Daytime Moon .

¨        Grammar assignment: Wise:   lesson  45.  

¨       Begin to memorize these additional noun chants:

  A noun is the name of a person, place, thing or idea.

 A common noun is the name of any person, place, thing, or idea.

A proper noun is the name of a particular person, place or thing.

(A proper noun always starts with a capital letter.)

Spelling Assignment:  Review words 101-120 any other words missed on previous tests.  Please practice the spelling words in the same manner as explained above in phonogram assignment.

Penmanship Assignment:  Copybook 1; complete 25.  Instruct and observe student to start at the top of each letter. 

Optional Assignment: Teach capital letter H of Printing Fun booklet.

 

Language Arts Assignment

¨       Literature:  Read aloud to your child from quality literature.  Aim for at least 30 minutes per day.  Please refer to classical book list to assist in choosing books suitable for your child.  Have child draw the main character on 3 X 5 card for story given in orange folder

¨       Reading:  First Steps, continue to read next story each day.

¨       Optional:  1. Use the 3X5 spelling cards to play bingo.   2.  If student is able to read independently, have her read aloud spelling cards written on 3 X 5 cards and organize a complete sentence using them.  3.  Dictate a simple sentence either from Wise or Sanseri.

¨       Please continue to make cards for new words as they are assigned.   

¨       Poetry: Review A Little Elf  and learn the first stanza of The Daytime Moon.

¨       Grammar:  Wise, lesson 47.

Spelling Assignment: Take spelling test on words 101-120.  Please turn on Tuesday via orange folder.

      Live Oak Spelling rules: Chant 1, 2, 4, 5. Begin to learn 7, the final silent E’s. 

¨       Penmanship assignment:  Copybook 1, complete p. 27.    

Optional Assignment: Teach capital letter I of Printing Fun booklet.

Language Arts Assignment

 

¨       Literature:  Read aloud to your child from quality literature for at least 30 minutes per day.  Please refer to the classical book list to assist in choosing books suitable for your child.

¨       Optional Have child draw the main character whom is labeled on the 3 X 5 card given in orange folder. Return them in the orange folders so they can be pasted in their Character notebooks.

¨       Reading:  First Steps, continue to read next story each day.

¨       Optional:    1. Use the 3X5 spelling cards to play bingo.   2.  If student is able to read independently, have her read aloud spelling cards written on 3 X 5 cards and organize a complete sentence using them.  3.  Dictate a simple sentence either from Wise or Sanseri.
