Spelling and Language Arts Assignments

Phonogram Assignment:  Continue to drill all 70 phonograms!  Please focus on

 ng, er,ir, ur, wor, ear, oo, ee, or, ai, ay, ow, ou, igh, ie, dge, wr.  Use the following two methods: 

1)        The parent should show the student each phonogram card, and the student should pronounce all the sounds that phonogram makes.  Make certain that he or she says the sounds exactly as indicated on the back of the phonogram cards.  Parents may prompt the student using the instructions on the back of the cards if necessary.  Repeat this drill with the phonograms needing prompting. 

2)        The parent should dictate the sounds each phonogram makes and the student should write the phonograms neatly, in manuscript, using only lower-case letters.   Please continue to dictate A-Z since letter reversals occur at times.

    Spelling Assignment:   

1)  Please review previous weeks words and any missed words.

2)  Live Oak Spelling rules:  Review orally 2, 3, 4, 7, 12, 17, 18, 19, 25, 26,  28 and 29.  We will introduce rule 27.   We are learning concepts not rule numbers. 

3)  Review spelling words:  I-3 words # 221-230 on p. 30.

     Language Arts Assignment: 

¨       Literature:  Read aloud to your child from classical literature for 30 minutes.

¨       Penmanship:  Copybook 1; complete p. 61 and may color p.60.

  Optional:  Teach cursive letter a and e handout from Abeka.

¨       Reading:  First Steps:  Continue to read a new story each day.  Do not tell the student the word prior to her sounding the word out.  

¨       Optional:  1. Use the 3X5 spelling cards to play bingo.   2.  If student is able to read independently, have her read aloud spelling cards written on 3 X 5 cards and organize a complete sentence using them.  3.  Dictate a simple sentence.

¨        4.  Make 3X5 cards for newly assigned spelling words.

¨       Poetry: Add expression to Mary’s Lamb and learn first stanza of  My Shadow.

¨       Grammar assignment Wise:  Lesson  63

¨       Noun chants:

  A noun is the name of a person, place, thing or idea.

 A common noun is the name of any person, place, thing, or idea.

A proper noun is the name of a particular person, place or thing.

(A proper noun always starts with a capital letter.)

A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun.

A verb is a word that shows action

¨       Review Live Oak Spelling rules: Review orally 2, 3, 4, 7, 12,17, 18, 19, 25,  and  (28 and 29 we will learn on Thursday).  We are learning concepts not rule numbers. 

¨       Review Spelling Words  I- 3 words # 221-240. on P. 30. 

Language Arts Assignment

¨       Literature:  Read aloud to your child from classical literature for 30 minutes.  Have child draw the main character on 3 X 5 card given in orange folder.

¨       Penmanship:  Copybook 1; complete p. 63 and may color p.62.

   Optional: Teach cursive letter i and o using Abeka handouts.

¨       Reading:  First Steps, continue to read next story each day.

¨       Optional:  1. Use the 3X5 spelling cards to play bingo.   2.  If student is able to read independently, have her read aloud spelling cards written on 3 X 5 cards and organize a complete sentence using them.  3.  Dictate a simple sentence using spelling words.  Please emphasize capital letters and punctuation.  

¨       Please continue to make cards for new words as they are assigned.   

¨       Poetry: Add expression to Mary’s Lamb and learn the first stanza of My Shadow.

¨       Grammar:  Wise:  Lesson 65.

¨       Practice writing the abbreviation:  Mr. and Mrs.   

¨       Review chants 3 times, introducing new verb chant.

Spelling Assignment: Take spelling test on words 221-240 on p. 30 section I-3  Please turn in Tuesday via orange folder.

    Live Oak Spelling rules: Review orally 2, 3, 4, 7, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 25,  28 and 29. We are learning concepts not rule numbers. 

Language Arts Assignment

¨       Literature:  Read aloud from quality literature to child for at least 30 minutes.

¨       Optional:   Have child draw the main character on the blank 3 X 5 card given in orange folder. Return via the orange folder. ( Mrs. Cressy will do this)

¨       Penmanship:  Copybook 1, complete p. 65, may color p. 64.  

Optional:  Teach cursive u using Abeka handout. Review a, e, i, and o.

¨       Reading:  First Steps, continue to read next story each day.

¨       Optional:    1. Use the 3X5 spelling cards to play bingo.   2.  If student is able to read independently, have her read aloud spelling cards written on 3 X 5 cards and organize a complete sentence using them. 

¨       Poetry: Add expression to  Mary’s Lamb and learn first stanza of My Shadow. 

¨       Grammar Wise: Lesson 66.

¨        Review noun, pronoun, and verb chant.
