Spell to Write and Read Assignments

Wednesday, September 28, 2005

 

Spelling Assignment:  Continue to drill the phonograms a, c, d, g, o, qu, f s b e h, i,  j and add k, l,  m, n, p, r,  t, u.    Use the following two methods:

 

1)        The parent should show the student each phonogram card, and the student should pronounce all the sounds that phonogram makes.  Make certain that he or she says the sounds exactly as indicated on the back of the phonogram cards.  If you are not certain of the exact sounds, listen to the audiotape.  Parents may prompt the student using the instructions on the back of the cards if necessary.  Repeat this drill at least six times. 

 

2)        The parent should dictate the sounds each phonogram makes and the student should write the phonograms (neatly, in manuscript, using only lower-case letters).   Make certain the student is saying all of the sounds of the phonogram as he or she writes it.  Try not to show the student the phonogram cards. The goal is for the student to be able to write the phonograms from dictation only.  Repeat this drill at least six times and file the completed drills in the section labeled Spelling/drills in the student’s binder.  Please be certain that the student’s name and grade as well as the date are written on the paper.

 

Penmanship assignment:  Complete copy page given as handout.  The parent should use the back of the phonogram card as a guide to observe the student for correct manuscript penmanship. Parents, please make certain that your student is doing her best work.  Good penmanship takes time.  Don’t allow your child to rush.  Please file this under penmanship in your spelling section. 

Read aloud to your child from quality literature.  Aim for at least 30 minutes per day.  If your student is able to read independently, have him or her read aloud to you as well from a level appropriate for her.   Please refer to classical book list to assist in choosing books suitable for your child.

 

Poetry assignment: Read the poem The Swing to your child.  Have your child recite up to the fourth line three times. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Friday, September 28

 

1.  Continue to drill the phonograms a, c, d, g, o, qu, f, s, b, e, h , i, j.  Add k, l, m, n, p, r, t, u.    Use the previous two methods listed on September 28.

  1. Repeat penmanship assignment.
  2. Read aloud to your child from quality literature.  Aim for at least 30 minutes per day.  If your student is able to read independently, have him or her read aloud to you as well.
  3. Repeat poetry assignment. 

 

Monday, October 3

  1. Continue to drill the phonograms a, c, d, g, o, qu, f, s, b e, h, i,  j. Add k, l, m, n, p, r, t, u.  Use the two methods listed on September 28.

2.    This is a test. Parent should give lined paper, place name, date, and label test. Parent is to dictate phonogram sounds a, c, d, g, o, qu, f, s, b, e, h, i , j, k, l, m, n, p, r, t, u. o student. Child is not to see phonogram.  Parent is to correct and place in test section.

  1.  Repeat penmanship assignment. 
  2. Repeat poetry assignment.
  1. Continue to read aloud to your child from quality literature as directed above.
