Science 3 Assignment Sheet for Week of November 28, 2005

            While studying simple machines, historical resources will be utilized.  During class the students will be involved in writing an article on simple machines for a Roman newspaper.  They will also be drawing to make a poster of the 6 simple machines.  We will start this next week when my family is not sick.  

Wednesday, November 30

 

¨       Review p. 166 BJU science text and complete notebook p. 50

 

Friday  December 2   (only work on class work for 30 minutes)

¨       Read from BJU science text p. 168-170 if haven’t already.

¨       Complete p.169 in BJ science text if we were unable to do this in class on Thursday.

¨       On weekend continue to read your book for our reading record!

¨       Start learning new chant listed on revised chant list.

Monday December 5 (only work on class work for 30 minutes)

¨       Read  from book for our reading record.

¨       Review all chants and continue learning new chant.

 

Vocabulary is given for reference:

Force:  Something that changes the position, shape, or speed of an object.

 

Work:  The amount of work done is calculated by multiplying the force times the distance the object has traveled.  Work = distance x force

 

Inclined plane:  a leaning, slanted flat surface used as a simple machine such as a ladder or ramp.

 

Fulcrum:  the point on which a bar rests.

 

Lever:  a bar that turns on a point.  An example of one is a shovel,

 

Wedge:  Two small inclined planes put together used to move into or under an object. An example is chisel or knife blade. 

 

Screw:  A screw uses an inclined plane  as it’s spiral ridge as it winds round and round.

 

Pulley:  A pulley is a wheel with a groove around its outside.  It changes the direction of the force.  An example is a flagpole.

 

Wheel and Axle:  A wheel is fixed to the shaft such as a doorknob.
